New Edition of Saints and Healers Explores Medicine as a Vocation of Faith and Service
Providence, RI — 2 March 2026 — Domina Nostra Publishing announces the publication of Saints and Healers: Models of Faith in Medicine, a revised and expanded edition of the respected work by Edgar A. Gamboa, M.D., FACS. First published in 2008 under the title Virtuous Healers, the book returns in a timely new edition addressing the moral, spiritual, and vocational dimensions of healthcare today.

An exclusive feature interview with Dr. Gamboa appears this week in Central Coast Catholic, highlighting the California physician’s reflections on faith, conscience, and the healing profession.
Saints and Healers examines medicine not only as a technical profession, but as a calling rooted in compassion, conscience, and reverence for the dignity of the human person. Through brief portraits of saints, physicians, missionaries, and caregivers, Dr. Gamboa explores how faith and science—often viewed as opposing forces—find their proper harmony when oriented toward authentic healing.
The updated edition reflects contemporary challenges in healthcare, including increasing commercialization, bureaucratic pressures, and ethical complexity. Each chapter concludes with questions for reflection, a spiritual exercise, and a prayer, making the book suitable for personal reading, group discussion, and use in medical ethics education.
Church and medical leaders have praised the book for its clarity and relevance. Archbishop Alberto S. Uy of Cebu describes Saints and Healers as “a beautiful gift to the Church and to the medical profession,” noting its vision of healing as a participation in Christ’s redemptive work.
Edgar A. Gamboa, M.D., FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He earned his medical degree from the Cebu Institute of Medicine and later completed a Master of Arts in Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Over the course of his career, he has served as a clinician, educator, and healthcare leader in both the United States and the Philippines, with a longstanding interest in the integration of faith and medicine.
Saints and Healers: Models of Faith in Medicine is available in hardcover paperback, and eBook. The book may be ordered online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers.
