On Sunday, 1 March 2026, Domina Nostra Publishing will release a revised and expanded edition of Saints and Healers: Models of Faith in Medicine by Edgar A. Gamboa, M.D., FACS.

First published in 2008 under the title Virtuous Healers, the work has quietly continued to serve students, physicians, and educators seeking to reflect more deeply on the moral and spiritual dimensions of healthcare. Nearly two decades later, the questions it raises remain pressing: What does it mean to heal faithfully? How should conscience guide professional practice? Can faith and science truly be harmonized in an age of complexity and commercialization?
Dr. Gamboa approaches these questions not as abstractions, but from the lived experience of clinical practice. Drawing upon the lives of saints, missionaries, and physicians, Saints and Healers proposes that medicine is more than technique or career — it is vocation.
“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit…” (John 15:16), Dr. Gamboa reflects. “I believe these words apply to the medical profession as to any of our individual callings.”
The new edition addresses contemporary challenges in healthcare while preserving the book’s central insight: authentic healing participates in a deeper spiritual reality. In every hospital room, clinic, and operating theater, the physician is invited to act not merely as technician, but as servant—mindful of the dignity of the human person and attentive to the demands of conscience.
In the coming days, we will share more about this revised edition, including a feature interview with Dr. Gamboa reflecting on faith, medicine, and the enduring relevance of this work.
Saints and Healers: Models of Faith in Medicine is currently available for pre-order in hardcover and ebook formats. Additional details may be found on the book’s page.
