Review
This review of The Rosary in Latin
and English was written by James B. Spencer and appeared in the spring 2004 newsletter of Una Voce America.
This booklet, published by UVA member Geoffrey Lopes, should be most useful for the many Latin
Mass communities whose members say the Rosary before or after Mass. Most such communities currently say the Rosary in
English, but with the help of this booklet, they can begin saying it in Latin, a practice that would provide a more meaningful
devotional setting for the traditional Latin Mass.
In locations where these Masses are not infrequent, perhaps only once or twice a month, reports of the regular public recitation
of the Rosary in Latin by the congregation might get back to the presiding bishop and persuade him to allow more frequent
Latin Masses. Such reports would certainly do no harm and might even convince the bishop that these people are really serious
about the Latin Mass, not just attending for nostalgic reasons.
This booklet contains all Rosary prayers in both Latin and English, that is, the Sign of the
Cross (Signum Crucis), the Apostles Creed (Symbolum
Apostolorum), the Our Father (Pater Noster), the Hail Mary (Ave Maria), the Glory Be (Gloria Patri), and the Fatima Prayer (O Mi Jesu). It also contains, in both languages, the name of each Mystery plus a Scripture
reading for each (including the recently added and entirely optional Luminous Mysteries, for anyone who might be interested
in them). Thus it has everything a person needs to say the Rosary in either language. It even has instructions on how to say
the Rosary and how to make two types of Rosary Novenas.
Beyond those basics, it has many other prayers frequently said before or after the Rosary,
both languages: Salve Regina + the “trailer” prayers, Alma Redemptoris Mater + trailers, Regina Caeli + trailers, the BVM
Litany of Loreto + trailers, the Memorare, and a few other miscellaneous prayers.
Latin Mass communities intending to begin saying the Rosary together in Latin before or after
their Latin Masses should inquire about the quantity discounts for this booklet offered by the publisher.
