Crèche (French for “manger” or “crib”) is a
popular name for a nativity scene displayed in churches and homes during the Christmas season. The custom was instituted by
Saint Francis of Assisi
(1181/82-1226) in Greccio (Italy) in 1223,
when he celebrated Christmas in a barn with animals and straw.
Nativity scenes
are traditionally displayed in churches from Christmas Eve until the octave of the Epiphany. In private homes, it is customary
to display the nativity scene on the 1st Sunday of Advent, while waiting until Christmas Eve to place the Christ
Child Himself in the crib (manger).
